Developing New Concept And Definition Of Organizational Behavior
The study of organizational behavior has developed from a small and obscure branch in behavioral theory to a full blown branch of study in human psychology. The definition of organizational behavior also developed along this line. It is now considered a separate science in behavioral studies and is defined generally as the study of human interpersonal relationships in existing organizations. This definition may be limited because organizational behavior does not concern itself only with interpersonal relationships; it also delves into the intricacies of organizational systems, procedures, and leadership dynamics.
Classical and modern philosophers and theorist have discussed organizational practices and the manner by which elements of organizations interact with each other. For modern managers however, organizational behavior is not simply an analysis of relationships in organizations, it is also a powerful tool in effectively implementing almost all management tasks. This utilitarian and use - value definition of organizational behavior is more appropriate in conducting the complicated practices of modern organizations and companies.

With the advent and dominance of global multinational corporations and global organizations, the classical view that organizational behavior concerns itself with micro issues in organizations can not hold anymore. Today, the study of organizational behavior encompass whole science on culture, sociology, politics, psychology, management, business administration, and business finance, to name a few. The globalization of whole industries and organizations has brought about the study of organizational citizenship behavior. Powerful organizations with operations in almost all corners of the world can use the science of organizational behavior to study power relationships and cultural diversity.
Although the basic principles of organizational behavior issues continues to be relevant in micro systems, its definition must now go beyond the micro level and tackle the complex processes involved in the operation of multi cultural organizations. New models of organizational behavior should arise for the theory to be relevant in todays global environment.
Another point of interest for students of organizational behavior is the role of interpersonal relationships and communication in organizations. This aspect serves a key role in the theory of organizational behavior. But high technology and new modes of communication process has redefined the concept of interpersonal relationships and communication. Today, persons living in separate countries with different cultural background can have interpersonal relationship through the use of modern modes of communication. The science of organization behavior and the principle of effective communication process should also adapt to this changing organizational communication method. It must redefine itself to include virtual relationships in virtual organizations to be relevant in todays fast changing environment.
Indeed, the definition of organizational behavior is developing just as global organizations are changing the conventional methods of organizational relationships, systems, and communication.
To be relevant, organizational behavior studies must adapt new models and concepts applicable in todays global setting.
